As a teen approaches age 18, it is important to think about who will be making medical decisions. Parents are natural guardians until their child reaches age 18. By law 18 year-olds can make their own decisions, give informed consent and see their medical records. They have rights to confidentiality provided in The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA). If a young adult has difficulty making informed medical decisions, it is important to consider the options available.
